An Immersive Journey
Hailed by Rolling Stone as "A virtual parade of 'wow' moments," Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil is an electrifying fusion of acrobatics, dance and visuals immersing the audience into the world of Michael's music. Driven by his biggest hits heard like never before in a riveting, state-of-the-art surround-sound environment Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil performs exclusively at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Michael "The King of Pop" Jackson passed away unexpectedly on June 25, 2009, but his spirit and music live on in Cirque du Soleil's "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" and now "Michael Jackson: One," Cirque's eighth resident show on the Las Vegas Strip.
"One" has opened May 23 at Mandalay Bay Theater, the former home of Disney's "The Lion King" and, before that, "Mamma Mia!," and tickets are now on sale. "One" is a much more theatrical production of "The Immortal World Tour," which was designed by director and choreographer Jamie King for arenas and other larger venues.
Cirque has said that "One" will blend its signature acrobatics, costume, set design and choreography with the discography from one of music's top-selling and most popular performers of all time. Expect, among others, the hits "Thriller," "Billie Jean" and “Smooth Criminal."
King told longtime entertainment journalist Robin Leach of the Las Vegas Sun that "One" is one of the longest pre-production schedules in Cirque's history, if not the longest. The casting and Montreal training -- particularly of acrobatics never seen before in any production -- began in October before moving to Mandalay Bay in March, about five months.
Cirque founder Guy Laliberte was reportedly in Las Vegas in March and April to add his input; in fact, he observed the first full run-through of the spectacle in April. Per news releases by Cirque: "'One' will be a state-of-the-art visual and audio experience creating a theatrical evocation of Michael's creative genius. Guided and inspired by his music, four misfits set out on a transformative adventure. By journey’s end, they will personify Michael's agility, courage, playfulness and love.
"Michael believed that all people are unique and equal regardless of race or culture. His message was one of unity, harmony and hope for a better world. At once evocative and enigmatic, the name 'Michael Jackson: One' also presents a paradox: Michael was a multifaceted artist who strove to fuse together various musical styles and art forms. It is a fitting title for a unifying journey into the world of The King of Pop, the genius, the visionary, The One."
