Day 1: LOS ANGELES – SANTA BARBARA – ROUTE 1/17 MILE DRIVE – CARMEL

Introduction:

Santa Barbara

A popular resort city for both Californians and beyond, Santa Barbara and the area around it have been inhabited for over 13,000 years and was the site of the excavation of the "Arlington Spring's Man" skeletal remains. Once a Spanish colonial town, the city still bears the same Spanish and Mission Colonial Revival styles of its founding alongside Victorian-style homes. It is home to a variety of festivals, including the Old Spanish Festival, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Santa Barbara French Festival, and the Summer Solstice Parade.

Tour Overview:

Depart north up the spectacular California Coast to the first stop in Santa Barbara. Visit a Spanish Mission and learn how these religious outposts were key in the development of the entire region. Continue to Solvang, a quaint Danish community to browse in the local shops. We head north to the world-famous Route #1 where we get to see the spectacular California coastline up close (small vehicles will travel the southern portion of route 1 while full size coaches will travel the 17-mile drive exclusively). After our visit we visit the town of Carmel, home to the actor Clint Eastwood, before enjoying the coastal views heading toward San Francisco for the evening.

Introduction:

Golden Gate Bridge

The world-famous remarkable Art Deco reddish-orange suspension bridge that crosses the Golden Gate Strait is a symbol of San Francisco and one of the most photographed bridges in the world. The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937 after almost four years of construction and its main engineer Joseph Strauss wrote a poem entitled "A Mighty Task is Done" about its completion. The Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion opened in 2012 as an on-site visitor's center for the structure's 75th anniversary and the 8,981-foot bridge attracts approximately 12 million people annually.

Alcatraz Island

This former high-maximum security federal penitentiary is located on Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay 1.25 miles off the coast. Famously known for housing some of the nation's most notorious criminals, Alcatraz was in operation from 1933-1963 and is frequently called "The Rock." The U.S. National Historic Landmark that is an extremely popular tourist attraction also contains the oldest functioning lighthouse on the country's West Coast, former military forts and rock pools. A Great Three Day Tour of California
We visited areas and locations from LA to and including SF. A well organized, pleasant and informative itinerary. . The weather was just right. It was sunny and not cold at all. Very nice indeed. Our tour guide (Dorit), a very knowledgeable and always courteous individual, did outstanding work throughout. Both, Dorit and Leo (our driver) were fantastic
