Day 2: Arctic Circle Adventure

Introduction:

Arctic Circle

The invisible ring of latitude on the globe runs through the Arctic Ocean and several countries including the United States by way of Alaska. The Arctic Circle in Alaska is marked by a sign along Dalton Highway marking it at a latitude of 66° 34′, just above the Seward Peninsula. It is the southernmost latitude in the Northern Hemisphere that the sun can stay continuously above or below the horizon for a 24-hour period.

Dalton Highway

Officially called the James W. Dalton Highway, this 414-mile roadway runs through the state of Alaska from Elliot Highway near Livingood to East Lake Colleen Drive in Deadhorse. Dalton Highway, also known as Alaska Route 11 and North Slope Haul Road, was built in 1974 to transport supplies for the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. The remote highway is featured in several television shows including "Ice Road Truckers" and "America's Toughest Jobs."

Yukon River

This 1,980-mile long river begins in Altin Lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia, runs through the Canadian Yukon Territory and then into the U.S. state of Alaska to empty into the Bering Sea in Wade Hampton. The Yukon River was a major thoroughfare during the Klondike Gold Rush from 1896-1903. Its Thirty-Mile section from Lake Laberge to the Teslin River is part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The river is only crossed by four vehicle bridges - The Lewes Bridge, The Robert Campbell Bridge, and two called The Yukon River Bridge.

Tour Overview:

We will head north from Fairbanks in the personalized, comfortable coaches at around 9:45 AM. Head back to the hotel around 12:00 AM the next morning.

12:30 PM We will arrive at the Dalton Highway––It is one of the most isolated roads in the United States. It directly parallels the pipeline. It begins at the Elliott Highway, north of Fairbanks, and ends at Deadhorse near the Arctic Ocean and the Prudhoe Bay oil fields. It became a legend through the hit TV show “Ice Road Truckers” on the History Channel. More chances to see wildlife, such as caribou, arctic fox, wolf, moose etc.

2:30 PM We will arrive at the Yukon River Camp––Traverse the mighty Yukon River. We will get some rest at Yukon River Camp and continue our trip.

5:30 PM We will arrive at the Arctic Circle. Cross the Arctic Circle and receive an official Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate.
