Day 1: South Coast & Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Introduction:

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is located in the South Region in Iceland right by Route 1 and the road that leads to Þórsmörk Road 249. The waterfall drops 60 m (197 ft) and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. Visitors can walk behind the falls into a small cave.

Skógafoss waterfalls

Skógafoss is a waterfall situated on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. After the coastline had receded seaward (it is now at a distance of about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Skógar), the former sea cliffs remained, parallel to the coast over hundreds of kilometres, creating together with some mountains a clear border between the coastal lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland.

Skaftafell

is a preservation area in Öræfi, southeast Iceland. It was once a major farm, later being named a national park. Originally known as Skaftafell National Park, it was subsequently joined together with other nearby regions to form the larger Vatnajökull National Park.

Vatnajokull glacier

sometimes translated as Vatna Glacier in English, is the largest and most voluminous ice cap in Iceland, and the largest in area in Europe after the Severny Island ice cap of Novaya Zemlya. It is in the south-east of the island, covering approximately 8% of the country.

Tour Overview:

On this tour you will travel along Iceland's South coast on the narrow strip of lush farmland that cuts between mountains, glaciers, and the vast Atlantic Ocean. The route is lined with natural treasures including the iconic Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, Skaftafell National Park, and Vatnajokull glacier to name but a few.
Passing the southern edge of the mighty Vatnajokull Glacier roughly midway between Reykjavik and Jokulsarlon glacier Lagoon, Skaftafell National Park offers magnificent views of glaciers, rivers and endless plains of sand. Skaftafell is a part of Vatnajokull Glacier National Park that stretches over an area of 14.000 square km, or roughly 10 times the size of London. When you think nothing can beat the scenery, Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon opens up before your eyes and takes your breath away. Packed with icebergs in various shades of white and blue, the lagoon's extraordinary scenery is popular with travellers, photographers and filmmakers from all over the world. Various bird species can be seen feeding in and around the lagoon and seals are a fairly common sight both at the mouth of the lagoon and at the seaside beach.

It would have been better if Seljalandsfoss Waterfall was seen during day light. For myself, the mishaps already mentioned beforehand did impact on the tour slightly
