Day 1: San Francisco - Sonoma - Napa - San Francisco

Introduction:

San Francisco

The unique California city is famous for its iconic Golden Gate Bridge, fog and cable cars. San Francisco was founded in 1776 by Spanish settlers and named for St. Francis of Assisi and the city grew dramatically during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Popular sites are the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Coit Tower, the crooked Lombard Street, Transamerica Pyramid, San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park and Chinatown. Now, plan your San Francisco travel for your next vacation. Find a Alcatraz Tour, Things to do in Fisherman's Wharf or take a Golden Gate Bridge Cruise to see the beauty of San Francisco.

Napa Valley

The Northern California region with a sign welcoming visitors to the "World Famous Wine Growing Region" contains more than 400 wineries and makes up more than 25 percent of the state's wine economy. Napa Valley is warmer than its wine producing counterparts in Sonoma and Santa Barbara counties and produces wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Zinfandel. The American Viticultural Area is visited by approximately five million people annually. The valley also contains a wine train, numerous highly rated Michelin-star restaurants, fabulous tasting rooms, luxurious resorts, seven golf courses and many spas featuring the region's hot springs.

Sonoma Valley

The birthplace of California's wine industry features miles of picturesque vineyards, 200-plus wineries, charming tasting rooms, world-class cuisine and striking adobe architecture. Sonoma Valley is located between the Mayacamas and Sonoma mountains and its first vineyards were planted by Franciscan monks in 1825 at Mission San Francisco Solano. American author Jack London owned a ranch in the valley and set his novel "Valley of the Moon" there. Sonoma Valley points of interest are Sonoma Plaza, Mission San Francisco Solano, Jack London State Historic Park, Blue Wing Inn, Sonoma Barracks, Toscano Hotel and Quarryhill Botanical Garden.

Tour Overview:

You'll leave the bustle of The City behind as you cross the Golden Gate Bridge or Bay Bridge heading for wine country. As you roll through wine country, you'll experience the many microclimates and see the soil types that combine to produce some of the world’s best winemaking grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc.

Along the way, keep your eyes open for endangered critters that make a home in the area, especially near the Napa-Sonoma Marsh. You may see a California brown pelican or a black rail, a Ridgway's rail or a Suisun shrew. The lush hillsides of the wine country are home to black-tailed deer, coyotes, red-tailed hawks and even a mountain lion.

You'll see a beautiful region that produces some of the world's best wines. Don't just take our word for it. You can look it up! At the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, a contest conceived by a British wine merchant with French judges, California wines won best-in-the-world honors. You won't be asked to do any blind-tasting comparisons during your four-winery tour. Instead, just remember these five easy wine-tasting steps: See, swirl, sniff, sip, swallow. Repeat. Now you've got it!

Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch with your tour companions and try out a variety of food-wine pairings and see what delights your taste buds. Whether you consider yourself a wine connoisseur or a wine-tasting novice, you'll be warmed by the good company of the people in your tour and your friendly vineyard hosts. After lunch the tour will be customized to the groups' desires by visit two more requested wineries (fees not included).

Don was amazing! We had a great day on the Wine Lovers day trip to Napa. We got to see 4 very different wineries, had a delicious lunch from a local deli, and had more wine than you could shake a stick at! Be advised that the ticket price only includes the cost for 2 tastings - you will need to pay if you want to taste at the other too. Don was the highlight for sure - very knowledgeable and friendly.
