Day 1: Wine Country & Muir Woods Tour

Introduction:

San Francisco

The unique California city is famous for its iconic Golden Gate Bridge, fog and cable cars. San Francisco was founded in 1776 by Spanish settlers and named for St. Francis of Assisi and the city grew dramatically during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Popular sites are the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Coit Tower, the crooked Lombard Street, Transamerica Pyramid, San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park and Chinatown. Now, plan your San Francisco travel for your next vacation. Find a Alcatraz Tour, Things to do in Fisherman's Wharf or take a Golden Gate Bridge Cruise to see the beauty of San Francisco.

San Francisco Bay

This shallow estuary in Northern California sits surrounded by San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose and drains water from about 40 percent of the state. This bay is home to five islands and eight bridges, the most recognizable being the Golden Gate Bridge.

Sausalito

The charming coastal city located not far from San Francisco in Northern California resembles a picture-perfect Mediterranean community and is a popular destination to visit and live. Sausalito contains more than 400 houseboats and singer Otis Redding wrote his hit "Dock of the Bay" while staying on a Sausalito houseboat in 1967. The city named for the Spanish word for "small willow grove" was first developed by William Richardson in 1838 and was an important site for fishing, transportation and shipbuilding in the past. Sausalito has been featured or referred to in many books, television shows, movies and songs.

Muir Woods National Monument

The 554-acre Northern California national park features 240 acres of old coast redwood trees, which are the largest tree species on earth and range in age from 400-800 years old. Muir Woods National Park was designated a national monument in 1908 by United States President Theodore Roosevelt after the coast redwood forest preservation efforts of U.S. Congressman William Kent and his wife Elizabeth. It was named after wilderness advocate John Muir as Kent requested. Visiting this spectacular redwood museum along The Golden State's coast is an unparalleled experience.

Golden Gate Bridge

The world-famous remarkable Art Deco reddish-orange suspension bridge that crosses the Golden Gate Strait is a symbol of San Francisco and one of the most photographed bridges in the world. The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937 after almost four years of construction and its main engineer Joseph Strauss wrote a poem entitled "A Mighty Task is Done" about its completion. The Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion opened in 2012 as an on-site visitor's center for the structure's 75th anniversary and the 8,981-foot bridge attracts approximately 12 million people annually.

Tour Overview:

Our Wine Country & Muir Woods tour combines a walk through the one of the tallest trees in the world with a relaxing afternoon at 3 wineries in the Wine Country, with the option to go to Alcatraz Island the next day. First of all, you drive to the Marin Headlands into Muir Woods, a beautiful valley filled with California Redwood Sequoia trees. You’ll spend around an hour at Muir Woods, and then, come back over the headlands and head north again. You’ll get the Wine Country history on the way to the historic Sonoma Valley and Carneros Regions, spending 30 minutes to 1 hour at each winery, with free Wine Tasting fees, and usually 5 appetizing wines at each one. At lunch time, you will visit the Sonoma Plaza. On your way back to San Francisco, we’ll also drive through the picturesque town of Sausalito, home of thousands of sailboats, and hundreds of floating houses, and a beautiful view of the Bay and San Francisco. Finally, we’ll make our way back to the Golden Gate and stop to take pictures high above the Bridge, if we didn’t do it in the morning. Now that you have visited Muir Woods, and the Wine Country, it's time to do Alcatraz!

Wineries – Extranomical Tours has endless experience when it comes to California Wineries, and we have compiled mountains of research and narrowed down the list of potential winery stops to a short list that not only represents the best that California Wine Country has to offer, but also keeps costs down and allows us to provide free tasting samples at each of our stops on this tour. We like to cover the range in size from small and homey, to large and grand, always with an eye for visual appeal, friendly atmosphere, good presentation, and good value. We do not always go to the same wineries on every tour, but choose 3 from the following list of quality wineries that we can count on.

The exprience was great. Akola (might be spelling her name wrong) was amazing. Her personality and guide was the icing on the cake. We had a great group even though it wasn't the tour we orginally booked for. Great customer service and wine tour selection. My only suggest will be a better direction to pick up location and be attentive to time management with pick up. Overall, my group of girls had a blast and we will definitely use again. Keep the sweet girl driver and keep her happy.
