Day 2: Salt Lake City - Jackson - Grand Teton National Park - Yellowstone National Park

Introduction:

Jackson Lake

This beautiful natural Wyoming lake located within Grand Teton National Park has one of the most massive high altitude lakes in the United States with a length of 15 miles. Jackson Lake was made larger by the 1911 construction of a dam and its subsequent renovations. It contains 15 islands and accommodates many recreation activities such as fishing and boating. Jackson Lake is surrounded by lodgings including the U.S. National Historic Landmark Jackson Lake Lodge.

Grand Teton National park

More than 300,000 acres of pristine wilderness awaits visitors to this Wyoming national park that was named after the highest summit in its Teton Mountain Range and has 200-plus miles of trails. Grand Teton National Park only included the Teton Mountains and six lakes when it was created back in 1929. It expanded throughout the years to include Jackson Hole National Monument, a 35,000-acre land donation from John D. Rockefeller Jr. and more federal property. The park's habitats are alpine, forests, sage brush and rivers, lakes and ponds with 61 species of mammals and 1,000-plus species of plants. Points of interest are the Snake River, Mount Moran, Jackson Lake, Grand Teton and Murie Ranch.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park, the America's first national park that was designated in 1872 boasts the largest geyser collection in the world including Old Faithful and is located in the U.S. states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Containing over 2 million acres, Yellowstone National Park is home to the largest high-altitude lake in North America and one of the biggest petrified forests in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park also features 290-plus waterfalls, more than 70 different mammals, 322 bird species, 1,100+ plant species, 12 campgrounds and 9 visitor's centers. There are plenty of bus, snowmobiling, hiking, bird watching, and horseback guided tours in Yellowstone National Park. A Yellowstone tour will bring you to popular sites such as Old Faithful Geyser, Yellowstone Lake, Mammoth Hot Springs, Grand Prismatic Spring, and much, much more! With so much to see and do, you'll need multiple days to explore this amazing national park with a Yellowstone vacation package.

West Yellowstone

Located right next to Yosemite National Park, this Montana town is a popular destination for lodging, restaurants, stores, and other amenities for visitors to the park. West Yellowstone was established in 1908 when the Oregon Short Line Railroad was created and named after Yellowstone National Park in 1920. It is separated into residential and commercial sections.

Old Faithful

This natural wonder located in Upper Geyser Basin is certainly the most famous geyser in Yellowstone National Park and possibly the world with its eruptions occurring every 60-110 minutes spewing from 3,700-8,400 gallons of hot water anywhere from 106-184 feet in the air. Old Faithful was named during the Washburn Expedition of 1870 because of its predictability of eruptions that can last as long as five minutes. The nearby U.S. National Historic Landmark Old Faithful Inn and other unique structures are located within the Old Faithful Historic District.

Yellowstone Lake

The largest high-altitude lake in North America is situated in Yellowstone National Park with a total area of 136 square miles including 110 miles along its shore and an elevation of 7,732. Yellowstone Lake freezes during the winter months and contains cutthroat trout, longnose suckers, redside shiners, longnose dace and lake chubs. Points of interest around the natural lake that flows into the Yellowstone River are Lake Village, Fishing Bridge, Lake Lodge, Lake Yellowstone Hotel and The Lake Ranger Station.

Introduction:

Devils Tower

Devils Tower (also known as Bear Lodge Butte) is a butte, possibly laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.

Devils Tower was the first United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).

In recent years, about 1% of the monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.

Mount Rushmore National Park

The epic 5,725-foot tall monument features the 60-foot granite carved faces of the four United States presidents of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Mount Rushmore National Memorial was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln Borglum between 1927-39 and the idea was thought up by historian Doane Robinson to bring tourists to the Black Hills area of South Dakota. The concept worked as the national landmark on 1,278 acres is visited by almost three million people every year. Nearby related attractions include Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, Presidential Trail and the Sculptor's Studio.

Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse was a Lakota war leader of the Oglala band in the 19th century. He took up arms against the United States federal government to fight against encroachment by white American settlers on Native American territory and to preserve the traditional way of life of the Lakota people. His participation in several famous battles of the Black Hills War on the northern Great Plains, among them the Fetterman Fight in 1866 in which he acted as a decoy and the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 in which he led a war party to victory, earned him great respect from both his enemies and his own people.
