Day 1: Wine Country & Muir Woods Tour

Introduction:

Napa Valley

The Northern California region with a sign welcoming visitors to the "World Famous Wine Growing Region" contains more than 400 wineries and makes up more than 25 percent of the state's wine economy. Napa Valley is warmer than its wine producing counterparts in Sonoma and Santa Barbara counties and produces wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Zinfandel. The American Viticultural Area is visited by approximately five million people annually. The valley also contains a wine train, numerous highly rated Michelin-star restaurants, fabulous tasting rooms, luxurious resorts, seven golf courses and many spas featuring the region's hot springs.

Sonoma Valley

The birthplace of California's wine industry features miles of picturesque vineyards, 200-plus wineries, charming tasting rooms, world-class cuisine and striking adobe architecture. Sonoma Valley is located between the Mayacamas and Sonoma mountains and its first vineyards were planted by Franciscan monks in 1825 at Mission San Francisco Solano. American author Jack London owned a ranch in the valley and set his novel "Valley of the Moon" there. Sonoma Valley points of interest are Sonoma Plaza, Mission San Francisco Solano, Jack London State Historic Park, Blue Wing Inn, Sonoma Barracks, Toscano Hotel and Quarryhill Botanical Garden.

Muir Woods National Monument

The 554-acre Northern California national park features 240 acres of old coast redwood trees, which are the largest tree species on earth and range in age from 400-800 years old. Muir Woods National Park was designated a national monument in 1908 by United States President Theodore Roosevelt after the coast redwood forest preservation efforts of U.S. Congressman William Kent and his wife Elizabeth. It was named after wilderness advocate John Muir as Kent requested. Visiting this spectacular redwood museum along The Golden State's coast is an unparalleled experience.

Madonna Estate

This family-owned winery started in 1922 by Italian immigrant Andy Bartolucci in a different location in Oakville and after selling that land, he purchased 160 acres in the Los Carneros Region of the Napa Valley in 1970. His family soon joined him in the wine making business and have been running the establishment ever since using organic and dry farming methods. Madonna Estate, which produces 50,000 gallons of various wine types per year, also contains a Reserve Wine Tasting Room and a store.

It is at this historic Sonoma plaza where youcan enjoy an optional gourmet cuisine paired with local wines in a comfortable private seating. Very happy with the tour, especially the fact that the driver (Jacob) went out of the way to show us some extra places. Nice. Bus rides a little bumpy. The wineries could have/should have done a better job explaining the taste details of th eir product - it wasn't until the last place that someone actually took time to explain wine tasting basics! Not the tour's fault of course, but something you should pass on to the operators/owners. But a great tour overall.

We did then Muir Woods and wine tasting tour and highly recommend it! From start to finish it was a wonderful and we’ll organised tour with the fantastic Anthony who was our driver/tour guide for the day. What a great guy, so knowledgable a bout San Fransisco, Muir Woods then also the wineries. He went above and beyond to make it such a great day. So a huge thank you to Anthony! He is an asset to this company! We can not recommend this tour enough. It gave us plenty of time to see Muir Woods and also plenty of time at each of the 3 wineries. Don’t hesitate to book this tour!
