Day 6: Devil's Tower - Mount Rushmore - Crazy Horse Monument - Casper

Introduction:

Devils Tower

Devils Tower (also known as Bear Lodge Butte) is a butte, possibly laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.

Devils Tower was the first United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).

In recent years, about 1% of the monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.

Mount Rushmore National Park

The epic 5,725-foot tall monument features the 60-foot granite carved faces of the four United States presidents of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Mount Rushmore National Memorial was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln Borglum between 1927-39 and the idea was thought up by historian Doane Robinson to bring tourists to the Black Hills area of South Dakota. The concept worked as the national landmark on 1,278 acres is visited by almost three million people every year. Nearby related attractions include Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, Presidential Trail and the Sculptor's Studio.

Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse was a Lakota war leader of the Oglala band in the 19th century. He took up arms against the United States federal government to fight against encroachment by white American settlers on Native American territory and to preserve the traditional way of life of the Lakota people. His participation in several famous battles of the Black Hills War on the northern Great Plains, among them the Fetterman Fight in 1866 in which he acted as a decoy and the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 in which he led a war party to victory, earned him great respect from both his enemies and his own people.
