Day 1: Washington D.C. - Philadelphia - New York

Introduction:

Liberty Bell

This legendary symbol of freedom in the United States containing a distinctive crack is on display protected by a glass case in the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mostly copper Liberty Bell was made in 1752 by British firm White Chapel Foundry with the the Bible verse "Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof" engraved on it. It was cracked when it first arrived in Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell Center features multimedia presentations and exhibits on the history of the Liberty Bell.

Independence National Historical Park

This Downtown Philadelphia 55-acre destination contains a myriad of historic landmarks relating to the American Revolution and the birth of the United States. Independence Mall State Park has Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Franklin Park, the United States Postal Museum, The First Bank of the United States, The National Constitution Center, Congress Hall, Old City Hall and many more important sites. Philadelphia was the country's capital from 1790-1800 and the park is a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.

Wall Street

This .7-mile-long street running eight blocks from Broadway to South streets in Lower Manhattan is synonymous with New York's Financial District and big business in the United States. Wall Street was laid out in 1685 and was the site of many historic moments including the 1789 inauguration of President George Washington, 1792 Buttonwood Agreement creating the New York Stock Exchange and the 1929 Stock Market Crash. Points of interest are the New York Stock Exchange, Federal Hall National Memorial, Deutsche Bank, Federal Reserve Gold Vault, Trinity Church and the Charging Bull statue.

One World Trade Center

Also known as Freedom Tower, this 1,776-foot tall skyscraper is the tallest building in the United States and the main structure for the new World Trade Center complex. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks destroyed the original World Trade Center Twin Towers located south of the new site, a plan to rebuild in memoriam of the tragedy was developed and construction began in 2006 with steel from the original building placed in the base. The 104-story One World Trade Center designed by David M. Childs has office space, retail stores, restaurants and an observation deck. A bronze monument dedicated to the response of military special forces members after September 11 stands in front of the building.
