Day 1: Seljalandsfoss - Skógafoss waterfalls - Reynisfjara volcanic beach
Seljalandsfoss
Seljalandsfoss is located in the South Region in Iceland right by Route 1 and the road that leads to Þórsmörk Road 249. The waterfall drops 60 m (197 ft) and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. Visitors can walk behind the falls into a small cave.
Skógafoss waterfalls
Skógafoss is a waterfall situated on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. After the coastline had receded seaward (it is now at a distance of about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Skógar), the former sea cliffs remained, parallel to the coast over hundreds of kilometres, creating together with some mountains a clear border between the coastal lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland.
Reynisdrangar
Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall near the village Vík í Mýrdal, southern Iceland which is framed by a black sand beach that was ranked in 1991 as one of the ten most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world.
Duration:~ 10 hours
On this tour you will journey along the South Coast that features many of Iceland's most awe-inspiring destinations, including the iconic Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls and Reynisfjara volcanic beach to name but a few. Travelling across the lush farmlands that cut between the coast and the mountain ranges and glaciers of the interior highlands you'll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, visit the main natural attractions and get to know the fascinating history of the region.
We begin by visiting one of Iceland's largest waterfalls, Skógafoss. The sheer power of it is truly a sight to see, as the curtain of water spills over the edge of an ancient seabed and falls 60 metres straight down.
We then move on to Reynisfjara black sand beach. This strikingly unique landscape is a favorite of film makers and photographers alike. We explore the volcanic pebble beach and learn a little about the fascinating history of the region from our expert guide. Some of the more impressive sights
include the odd rock face of columnar basalt, looming cliffs, hidden caves and the magnificent Reynisdrangar sea stacks that rise from the ocean at the foot of Reynisfjall mountain.
If the weather cooperates, you will be able to see several well known volcanoes during the tour, including Hekla, Katla and the notorious Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The last stop before returning to Reykjavik is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you'll get a chance to walk behind the falls, if conditions allow. Experience the top sights of south Iceland on this comprehensive tour and discover the amazing diversity in Iceland's landscape.
