Day 1: Reykjavík City Sightseeing

Introduction:

Reykjavik

Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland. It is located in southwestern Iceland, on the southern shore of Faxaflói bay. Its latitude is 64°08' N, making it the world's northernmost capital of a sovereign state. With a population of around 128,793 (and 228,231 in the Capital Region), it is the center of Iceland's cultural, economic and governmental activity, and is a popular tourist destination.

Reykjavík is believed to be the location of the first permanent settlement in Iceland, which, according to Landnámabók, was established by Ingólfr Arnarson in AD 874. Until the 19th century, there was no urban development in the city location. The city was founded in 1785 as an official trading town and grew steadily over the following decades, as it transformed into a regional and later national centre of commerce, population, and governmental activities. It is among the cleanest, greenest, and safest cities in the world.

Old Höfði House

Höfði is a house in Reykjavík, Iceland, best known as the location for the 1986 Reykjavík Summit meeting of presidents Ronald Reagan of the United States and Mikhail Gorbachev of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. That effectively was a step to the end of the Cold War. Within the building, the flags of the United States and the Soviet Union are cross-hung to commemorate the meeting.

Hallgrímskirkja

Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran (Church of Iceland) parish church in Reykjavík, Iceland. At 74.5 metres (244 ft) high, it is the largest church in Iceland and among the tallest structures in the country. The church is named after the Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614–1674), author of the Passion Hymns.

Öskjuhlíð

Öskjuhlíð is a hill in the centre of Reykjavík, Iceland. It is 61 metres (200 ft) above sea level. The hill is a designated outdoors area and is covered with trees. At the top of the hill stands Perlan, a landmark building set on top of six water tanks. It is a city landmark built during Davíð Oddsson's period as mayor.

Tour Overview:

This tour takes you on a journey to explore the capital city’s top attractions, learn interesting facts and hear riveting stories. It provides an excellent opportunity to discover the various sights to see or activities to do in Reykjavík during your holiday in Iceland.

The tour begins at the old Höfði house where the historic summit between American president Ronald Reagan and Russian president Mikhail Gorbatsjov took place in 1986. Höfði house is also believed to be home to a ghost known as the White Lady.

The tour continues to the stunning Harpa concert hall and conference centre which was the winner of the 2013 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture—the Mies van der Rohe Award.

Next up is the city centre where we will see the infamous Hallgrímskirkja church, whose unique design was inspired by the basalt lava columns—a common volcanic rock formation in Icelandic nature.

We proceed to the viewing platform at Perlan which provides a breathtaking 360° view over the charming city of Reykjavík.

The final stop on the tour is on the outskirts of the capital to visit Bessastaðir, the official residence of the President of Iceland.
